What it is

An embassy (or consular) visa is the traditional route: you apply at the destination country's embassy or consulate in your own country, and the visa is placed in your passport before you leave.

How to get one

You book an appointment, submit the application form with your passport, photos, supporting documents (often proof of funds, travel bookings and an invitation or itinerary), pay the fee, and collect the passport once the visa is issued.

How long it takes

This is the slowest route — appointments and processing can take days to weeks, so start early, especially in peak season. Requirements vary by destination and by the embassy handling your application.

How it differs from other visa types

Unlike an e-visa or visa on arrival, it needs an in-person application before travel. It is the route when a country offers no online or on-arrival option for your nationality — and the one where a paid visa service can save the most hassle.
